With picture postcard villages and clean mountain air Switzerland and Austria will be a really popular Euro 2008 destination for football fans. The Euro 2008 football championship tournament starts on 7th June and the final will be on 29th June 2008 in Vienna. There will be four groups of four teams who will play each other. The top two from each group will progress to the Quarter-finals and then hopefully through to the Finals. The venues for Euro 2008 are as follows; Vienna (Wien) Vienna is the capital of Austria in the heart of Austria. Vienna is a beautiful city famous for its many lovely parks, numerous opera houses and concert venues that serve up the best of Mozart and Strauss. Vienna will be a great setting for the final and an admirable host. The Football will be played at: Ernst Happel Stadion which was built in 1931 and has a capacity of 49,000 The stadium was modernised in 2005 and now has a crowd-capacity of about 50,000. Additional stands over the athletics tracks will be in place for EURO 2008. The stadium, located in the middle of the Prater (Vienna's amusement park) near the Danube, hosts most of Austria's international matches. Basle The Swiss city of Basle straddles the border of Switzerland, Germany and France and as a result, is one of Switzerland's most open cities. If you fly to Basle you will actually land in France! The Euro 2008 matches will be played at: St Jakob Park which has a capacity of 30,000 and was built in. The stadium, where FC Basle play their national and Champions League matches is located near the city centre and also houses a large shopping centre, offices, restaurants, cafés, a fitness centre and an old people's home with 107 apartments Salzburg Salzburg is well known as a skiing centre and is steeped in history and culture. Salzburg is perhaps most famous for being the birthplace of Mozart. Salzburg has some charming architecture and boasts over 100 churches, castles and palaces. The Euro 2008 matches in Salzburg will be played at; Stadion Salzburg Wals-Siezenheim (stadium capacity 30,000). The stadium is located near the city outskirts. SV Austria Salzburg play their matches in the arena. Zurich Zurich is Switzerland's biggest city with a population of 340,000. Zurich is one of the world's cleanest and safest cities and a well known insurance and financial centre. Zurich's old town, next to the Limmat River is clustered with small medieval buildings, cafés and bistros giving Zurich a more intimate feel. The matches during the Euro 2008 championships will be played at: Letzigrund Stadion which has a stadium capacity of 30,000. The stadium will be refurbished for the start of EURO 2008. The Letzigrund Stadium is the home of FC Zurich and site of the famous, annually-held Athletics Meeting in August. The stadium is situated close to Zurich city centre. Innsbruck Innsbruck is no stranger to sporting excellence, having hosted the Winter Olympics in 1964 and 1976. Set amongst the Alps Innsbruck is surrounded by lovely skiing villages and is the capital of the Tirol region. During Euro 2008 matches will be played at; Stadion Tivoli NEU. The Stadium Tivoli NEU is normally used by FC Tirol Innsbruck and the capacity will be extended from approximately 15,000 to 30,000 spectators for the Euro 2008 tournament. The stadium is located near the city centre. Geneva Geneva is situated in the South West corner of Switzerland and is internationally recognised as a beautiful city on Lake Geneva. Geneva is right next to the border with France and many people who work in Geneva live in France. Geneva has quite a large airport and is a hub for travellers all over the region. Stade de Genève. The stadium was opened on March 16, 2003. and is situated at La Praille, (near the French border) and is home of the Geneva clubs Servette. The Stadium is housed in a complex which includes a shopping centre with underground parking, a hotel, TV studios, offices and convention rooms, as well as a cultural centre. Klagenfurt Klagenfurt is Austria's southern most provincial capital. Klagenfurt is an 800 year old renaissance town full of charm and beauty. Klagenfurt is near a lake and is a picturesque setting. Wörthersee Stadion. The stadium re-design started in 2005 and is similar to St. Jakobs Park in Basle with a stadium capacity of 30,000. Berne Berne is the federal capital of Switzerland and the country's most visited city. As with many of the host cities for the European Championships 2008, Bern is a relatively small city but with lots of character and lovely buildings. Stade de Suisse Wankdorf was reopened in June 2005. The stadium includes a shopping centre, restaurants, offices, flats, a school, and is the home of BSC Young Boys, one of the oldest clubs in Switzerland.
