In 2007 The Rugby World Cup is being hosted in France, although some matches will be played in Edinburgh and Cardiff. Edinburgh is in Scotland , the northern part of the UK. Edinburgh will be the venue for two of Scotlands group matches. It is easy to access by air, or you can take a ferry from France to England and drive up, or take a ferry from Belgium direct to Edinburgh. The Murrayfield stadium was originally built in 1925 on the site of the Edinburgh Polo Club. At one stage it had the largest rugby ground capacity - 104,000 spectators. Murrayfield was redeveloped in 1994 and now holds 67,500. Bordeaux. The Chaban-Delmas Stadium in Bordeaux was renovated and enlarged for the 1998 Soccer World Cup and will be the venue for four Rugby World Cup matches. Bordeaux is situated half way down the west coast of France. Cardiff. The new Millennium Stadium in Cardiff (built 2000) is in the centre of the city and has been used for many events other than rugby. It has a retractable roof and a 72,500 capacity and will be the venue for 4 Rugby World cup matches including a quarter final. Cardiff is easily accessed from France by Ferry or plane. Lens. Lens is in the North East corner of France (Pas-de-Calais) and not normally associated as a rugby hotbed but will host three matches. Lyon. Lyon is half way down the eastern border of France and normally a soccer town. The stadium is a classic design and will be a venue for three matches in the early stages of the Rugby World Cup 2007 Marseille. Marseille is a port city on the south coast of France and has fanatical fans of soccer and Rugby. Marseille will host five 2007 RWC matches including a quarter final. Montpellier. Montpellier is situated on the south coast of France and be a RWC 2007 venue for four rugby games. Montpellier has a modern stadium with 35,500 seats, and Soccer World Cup matches were held there in 1998. Nantes. Nantes will carry three matches of the Rugby World Cup. Nantes is situated in the North West of France. La Beaujoire Stadium in Nantes is next to the old Saupin Stadium Paris. Paris is the capital of France and is in the north east area of France. Five RWC 2007 matches will be played at the 'Parc des Princes' stadium which was the national stadium from 1972 to 1998. It has a capacity of 50,000 and will be remembered as the venue of many classic matches. St Denis. St Denis is actually a city albeit in the north east suburbs of Paris. The sacred basilica located at the centre of the city is considered to be one of the great masterpieces of Gothic art and is also the final resting place of a good many French kings. Nearby is the magnificent Stade de France where France won the World Cup (soccer) in 1998. Seven matches will be played there including the semi- finals and the final. Saint-Étienne. Saint-Étienne lies to the south west of Lyon on the eastern border of France. During the 2007 Rugby World Cup Saint-Étienne will be the venue of three world cup matches. Toulouse. Toulouse is a major rugby town with a successful team. The Stade Toulousain team, which has provided many international players has been champion of France 17 times and were the first European clubs champion in 1996, a title that it won again in 2003. Toulouse is in the South of France near the Pyrenees and the border with Spain. During the Rugby world cup in 2007 it is possible that your team could play in many different areas of France. For example England play in Lens, St Denis, Nantes and Paris. If successful they will then be in Marseille for a QF. Scotland play in Edinburgh and St Etienne and then would progress to Cardiff or St Denis Wales play in Cardiff, Nantes and would progress to Marseille. Ireland play in Bordeaux, Paris and St Denis and then Cardiff or St Denis. Australia play in Lyon , Montpellier and Bordeaux and Marseille later if winners New Zealand play in Marseille, Lyon, Toulouse and then Cardiff or St Denis South Africa play in Paris, Lens, Montpellier and then onto Marseille Therefore it may be that you will have to move to various parts of France in order to follow your team.
