Finland is such a large and varied country that deciding where to travel will be one of the toughest thins for anyone renting a motor home. Whilst some further information on the different areas follows, it is probably worthwhile visiting the Tourist Board website (www.visitfinland.com) to request a brochure since it contains various 'routes' to suit your desires. The routes are clearly marked with a brown sign saying 'Tourist Roads'. The caravan tourist will enjoy the freedom of following the routes as given, of combining one or more of the routes or of adding in extra stops and visits to suit their appetite. What could be better!

The routes described in the brochure (and on the website) include:

'The Archipelago Trail' - cross over twelve bridges and use eight road ferries to experience one of the most beautiful archipelagos in the world;

'Manor House Tours' - east and west of Helsinki;

'Three Cities of the South' - Helsinki, Tampere, Turku, each with a unique flavour;

'The Thousand Lakes Scenery Tour' - enjoy the Lakeland district, the largest region of lakes in Europe;

'The Central Finland Tour' - taking in varied scenery from lakes to hills, villages to towns;

'Helsinki to Lapland' - take the highway through Finland's three fascinating entities, lakeland, wilderness and Lapland;

'Via Karelia Route' - the oldest touring route in Finland reaching from the south of Finland to Lapland along the Russian border;

'The Midnight Sun Tour' - tour of northern Finland.

Finland is a large country but a country of stunning contrasts. On the one hand, campervan travellers can enjoy the peace and tranquillity of lakes and moorland, mountains and rivers. They can revel in old-fashioned villages and historical houses, many with large Russian or Swedish influences. On the other hand, motorhomers can make the most of the modern architecture, art and design for which Finland is famous. This is, of course, abundant in Helsinki but it also exists in all the smaller towns too creating an incredible contrast to the countryside. Having a country with multiple pick-up locations also makes it far easier for the RV tourist to make the most of this huge, varied country whether you want to drive shorter or longer stretches. Whatever your desires, few countries offer as much variety for all age groups; caravanners will not be disappointed and will return to see more!
