Kuopio is the place where many motor home tourists may arrange to pick up their vehicle, placing you right in the lakeland district. It is in Kuopio that most visitors will feel the proximity of Eastern Europe and it is worth visiting this area just for that. Kuopio has a Russian Orthodox monastery (Valamon Luostari) and museum (Ortodoksinen Kirkkomuseo) that houses eclectic and rare collection of religious art. The reason for the existence of these pieces of art in Kuopio is that they were brought here after Karelia (the eastern province of Finland) was ceded to Russia at the end of World War II. The monastery has a daily service and remains an important centre for the Russian Orthodox religion in Finland.

Aside from the strong Eastern European feel in Kuopio, visitors should endeavour to go to the market place in Kuopio. This particular market place or tori is open almost daily all year round and is regarded as being one of the best and most colourful markets in Finland. During the summer months the market is open Monday through Friday from 7am till 5pm and from 7am till 2pm on Saturdays. During the winter the opening hours are reduced to 7am till 2pm Monday through Friday.

Other attractions of Kuopio, eastern Finland's largest city, include the Alahovi Berry Farm, a traditional Finnish logging camp and smoke sauna, the beautiful beaches and innumerable cruises. If cooking with natural products appeals to you, make the most of your motor home by picking wild berries and mushrooms and preparing yourselves something exotic - delicious!
