Touring The Lakelands in a motorhome:
The Lakeland region of Finland comprises the stretch of land between Lapland and southern Finland. It is known as the 'lakelands' since nearly 200,000 lakes are scattered through the region, most with little log cabins scattered along their shores. RV travellers to this area are recommended to seek out the smaller villages in this region since they are by far more appealing than the bigger towns. An exception to this is Savonlinna, which will be discussed shortly. The Lakeland area of Finland is also the area over which many battles have been fought between Russian and Sweden over the centuries and as a result it has an interesting history. Obviously, water sports and boat crossings or tours over the lakes are the most common activities in this area. The Finlandia Canoe Relay, a 7-day, 500Km relay race takes place in mid-June (so if you are feeling fit ….) and there are numerous windsurfing centres on the lakeshores. This region is also known for its textile workshops and factories (Tekstiilitehdas) and travellers can expect to see woven wall hangings and rya (ryiji) rugs here. The region is also the birthplace of Iittala Glass, Finland's most famous glassware manufacturer as well as being an area with perfect natural resources for the production of Finnish pottery. So, something for every RV traveller!
