RV drivers wishing to visit the north of Finland will most likely want to drive into Lapland, Finland's wilderness area where they will discover endless forests, fells and incredible silence! The area is vast but there are still excellent amenities available. Despite seeming to be miles from anywhere, explorers have discovered artefacts indicating that Lapland has long traded with foreign nations. The native people of Lapland are the Sami and about 4,500 remain in the area, with the remaining part of the 200,000 strong population being Finnish.

The Sami population do not merely live in Finland. Rather, their home territory stretches from the northern parts of Norway through northern Sweden and Finland and across to the northern regions of Russia. The Sami population are traditional reindeer herders and many still live their traditional way of life with its strong culture. Sami culture is a wonder to experience. The traditional clothes are made in fantastic colours and their handicrafts make use of natural resources such as antlers, wood, bone, leather and more. Although Sami handicrafts are not usually cheap, it is important to remember that they are still hand made from materials gathered by hand and that many of the items are very intricately carved. Motor home tourists will never regret buying one or two of these exquisite pieces of work that are often fully functional as well as being works of art in themselves.

Lapland is the land of 24-hour daylight during the summer so RV travellers will be able to make the most of this incredible landscape. Here, outdoor activities are de rigueur - walking, hiking, mountain biking, fishing, canoeing, swimming, midnight-sun golf and more. An added benefit is the abundance of natural foods which caravanners are free to pick - delicious. It is also an opportunity for children to collect unusual natural items with which to make their own crafts! Winter in Lapland is equally as intriguing and stunning as the summer though there is very little daylight and temperatures are extremely low.
