Driving RV's, motorhomes and campervans in FinlandDriving in Finland is a joy and campervan drivers will relish the empty roads. Traffic, in common with most of Europe, drives on the right with overtaking on the left. Priority roads are clearly marked and may not be parked on. At road junctions where roads are of equal status, priority is from the right. Some cities have trams and these have priority over cars. Road signs in use are the normal international ones. There are a few local signs such as a white 'M' on a blue background to indicate a passing place on a narrow road. A black sign denotes a local service such as smoked fish, savukalaa, strawberries, mansikkaa or fresh peas, herneitä. Further information can be obtained from the Automobile and Touring Club of Finland, Autoliitto ry, Hämeentie 105 A, PL 35, 00550 Helsinki) or from the Finnish Tourist Board. A couple of things to note are that the wearing of seatbelts in the front and back of a vehicle is compulsory as is the use of dipped headlights at all times. The blood alcohol limits in Scandinavia are particularly low compared to many other European countries and penalties are high, so be careful. Be especially careful with regards to blood alcohol levels on Saturday and Sunday mornings, or on mornings after a national or local holiday, when the police catch out many drivers! Despite the sparse population, motor home drivers will find all primary and secondary roads in Finland hard surfaced, i.e. tarmacked. Some of the smaller roads, especially in the north, however will have sand, grit or oil-bound gravel surfaces. Don't let this put off your RV tour though as there are strict regulations concerning these road surfaces too and as a result they are all easily passable by caravan and car alike. Most are also wide enough to permit easy passing should it be necessary. Speed limits are: 75 mph (120 Kmh) on motorways, 50 mph (80 Kmh) on ordinary roads and 30 mph (50 Kmh) in built-up areas. Be warned that exceeding the speed limits can put you at risk of fairly hefty fines! Fuel prices in Finland are relatively high, as in the other Scandinavian countries, but a distinct advantage in Finland is that diesel vehicles can fill up with duty-free heating oil (polttoöljy)! Anyone adventurous enough to be caravanning during the winter months should note that although the roads are well cared for and groomed, tremendous care must be taken. During the winter months of December, January and February the use of winter tyres is obligatory. |
