Punkaharju is a geographical masterpiece, a ridge rising out of the waters of a couple of lakes and stretching out for five miles. Despite its occasionally exceptional narrowness, the Punkaharju ridge manages to accommodate a road and train tracks, no mean feat when you consider that in places it narrows to a mere 25 feet - definitely a drive for the adventurous motorhome driver.

Just south of Punkaharju visitors like to drive to the Taidekeskus Retretti (Retretti Art Centre), a modern art complex of unique design which incorporates a cavern section built directly into the ridge itself. During the summer the art complex comes alive, offering dozens of different scheduled activities and concerts. More information is available from the Finnish Tourist Office.

Lappeenranta is another place that campervan drivers might like to visit. Here, from mid-June to the end of August, enormous sand sculptures are built in the harbour area making for a very unusual exhibition. Close by, at Imatra, a weeklong jazz extravaganza, the Imatra Big Band Festival, takes place in June-July. There is also the Saimaa Canal system and more … Lappeenranta is situated in an exposed location on the frontier with Russia and over the years it was the site of several battles. In 1743 it passed to Russia and it remained in their possession until 1811 when it once more returned to Finnish ownership. As a result, there are the remains of fortifications from the 17th & 18th centuries and the Russian era still extant. If the thought of all the battles and changes in Lappeenranta leaves the RV traveller exhausted, fear not. In 1824 a mineral spring was discovered in the area and this resulted in the town becoming a spa town much favoured by Russian nobility. Since 1974 the spa has been open year-round. It specialises in cardiac and circulatory disorders and rheumatism and so aside from helping with some of today's most common ailments, it will definitely benefit campers who've enjoyed much of what Finland has to offer but who might also be a little 'van-weary' after some hours of driving! Go on, indulge!!
