Rovaniemi lies 516 m (832 Km) north of Helsinki. Some RV drivers may have travelled up here from Helsinki but if you don't fancy the long drive, why not hire your motor home in Rovaniemi and make your way here by train or plane? Rovaniemi is the hub of northern Finland and is located more or less on the Arctic Circle at the junction of two major rivers. Despite is northerly location, Rovaniemi is a modern, cultural, university city with a population of about 34,000. Here you will find the world's northernmost professional theatre, Lappia-Talo and the Arctic Research Centre (Arktikum). And, yes campers, Santa lives nearby at Joulupukin Pajakylä (Santa Claus Village). Though you might think that this would require a winter visit, you'd be mistaken as gifts can be bought here for shipping at any time of the year. It is one of the best places to visit if you want to see and pet reindeer since this is very unlikely in the wild.

Sodankylä, 81m (130Km) north of Rovaniemi is one of the oldest Sami settlements in Lapland. This is also the region of fells, vast moor-like expanses of wilderness with plenty of opportunities for cycling, hiking, orienteering and skiing (depending on the time of year!). Tankavaara, 65m (105Km) north of Sodankylä is a well-developed gold-panning area the history of which can be learnt at the Kultamuseo (Gold Museum). Saariselkä, 25m (40Km) north of Tankavaara is the place to head for if you are a motor home tourist with a penchant for extreme wilderness. Here there are thousands of miles of unspoilt terrain with marked trails through forests and over fells where you can loose yourself for days without bumping into another soul. At Ivalo, 25m (40Km) north of Saariselkä RV travellers can visit Tunturikeskus Kiilopää, a children's multi-activity centre with lots of exciting summer and winter activities. Finally, if you take your motor home to Inari, 24m (40Km) northwest of Ivalo you arrive at the Sami Parliament following a beautiful drive along the lakeshore. Look out too for Inarin Porofarmi, a working reindeer farm 9m (14Km) southeast of Inari, where racing reindeer are trained and where you might be able to indulge in some reindeer sled driving.
