Finland is one of the four Scandinavian countries and the 7th largest country in Europe with a landmass of some 130,500 square miles (338,000 square kilometres). It stretches 719 miles (1157 Km) from north to south and 336 miles (542 Km) from east to west and yet only has a population of about 5 million. Of these, 65% live in towns leaving much of the country empty and ripe for exploration by RV (Recreational Vehicles - motorhomes and Campervans). Read the useful information on driving a motorhome in Finland.

Finland is the Scandinavian country that lies furthest to the east. It is bordered to the east by Russia, a fact that has determined much of Finland's rich history and also some of its architecture. To the west, the southern part of Finland lies adjacent to the Gulf of Bothnia; the northern part of the country borders first northern Sweden and right at the very top, Norway. It is this multitude of borders that makes Finland easy to incorporate in a multi-country campervan trip for those who perhaps have a little longer to travel around. Finland is also surprisingly close to Estonia with Tallin lying a short distance across the Gulf of Finland.

Touring Finland by caravan/motorhome is a treat for those who like nature. It is a relatively empty country in terms of population but is nevertheless served by an excellent road infrastructure (as a result of its hydroelectric power and logging industries). Finland has the largest expanses of inland water in the world with water comprising over 10% of its total surface area (this equates to an area larger than the United Kingdom!). According to the Finnish Tourist Board, Finland has 187 888 lakes, 5100 rapids and 179 583 islands - quite something for the intrepid RV explorer. In addition, 69% of its surface area consists of woodland and only 8% cultivated land making it perfect for wildlife spotting, trekking, cycling and more. Many of the islands mentioned above form part of Europe's largest archipelago which lies off Finland's southwest coast.
