It is bordered to the east by Russia, a fact that has determined much of Finland's rich history and also some of its architecture. According to the Finnish Tourist Board, Finland has 187 888 lakes, 5100 rapids and 179 583 islands - quite something for the intrepid RV explorer. In addition, 69% of its surface area consists of woodland and only 8% cultivated land making it perfect for wildlife spotting, trekking, cycling and more. Many of the islands mentioned above form part of Europe's largest archipelago which lies off Finland's southwest coast. |
