The south coast of Finland is the place to visit if you are a motor home tourist with an interest in islands, as here you will find more than 30,000 islands in the spectacular archipelago that stretches from the Gulf of Finland to the Baltic. The Åland Islands are rugged and are reached by ferry from Turku. Turku itself is the harbour city that for centuries has been the gateway through which foreign culture has reached Finland and as such is both historic and scenic. It is Finland's oldest city and ancient capital and is Finland's 5th largest city today. It remains Finland's intellectual centre having once been the site of Finland's first university and now being the home to both the Finnish University and a Swedish-speaking academy. If history is what you seek, look no further. Turku Cathedral (Turun Tuomiokirkko) is 700 years old and is the seat of the Archbishop of Finland and Turku Castle (Turun Linna) is a fortress initially built at the end of the 13th century though the newer part dates from the 16th century.
The very southwest part of Finland is significantly quieter than the western part around Turku and so will suit RV passengers seeking a quieter holiday. During the peak months of summer, the region livens up significantly but it still remains largely pastoral with villages built of traditional wooden houses. In Snappertuna summer brings with it numerous concerts, dramas and old-time market fairs; Tammisaari has an abundance of 18th and 19th century buildings in the Old Quarter and a lively marina; Hanko has long stretches of beautiful sandy beaches and some stunning, large private homes; Rauma, the 3rd oldest city in Finland, is the traditional centre of lace-making and its Old Town has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site; Naantali, an ageing medieval town, is the location of the Finnish Presidential summer palace - Kultaranta - whose gardens contain more than 3,500 rosebushes (guided tours can be arranged). From Naantali, travellers with children should definitely schedule a visit to Moomin World on Kailo Island, a theme park bringing to life the characters from a wonderful fairly tale. If the Moomins are unfamiliar to you, don't worry because the characters and stories are fabulous!
