Tampere is Finland's 3rd largest town and largest industrial city. It is wonderfully located in between two large lakes, Lake Näsijärvi and Lake Pyhäjärvi which themselves are linked by rapids stretching 945 metres with a fall of 18 metres. Not only does Tampere have this magnificence but the city itself has another 200 or so lakes within its city limits too. Perfect for the motorhome tourist who desires a blend of city, industry and wonderful countryside. Many a year ago, the rapids provided Tampere with its electricity and as a result there are factories and other large buildings along its banks. Nevertheless, these are said to enhance the natural wonder of the rapids, another reason for the RV traveller to visit the area.

As with many of Finland's larger towns, Tampere has some beautiful sculptures by well-known Finnish sculptors. Here, the main ones to look out for are by Wäino Aaltonen near the Hämeensilta Bridge. Also near this bridge, campervan travellers are recommended to look out for the old factories, many of which have now been converted into wonderful shops and boutiques.

In years past, Tampere was part of the main trading route to Russia as well as being on the main trading and hunting route to northern Finland. This has resulted in the city becoming a cultural centre over the years. It has several theatres and in mid-August the Tampere Theatre Summer gets under way as part of the Finland Festival. This involves open-air performances in the Pyynikki open-air theatre with its revolving amphitheatre that rotates the audience to face any one of a number of different sets.

Other places of interest for the trailer tourist within the city include the Näsinneulan Näkötorni (Näsinneula Observatory Tower), Finland's tallest observation tower, the top of which houses an observatory and a restaurant. What better way to get a fantastic overview of the area with its lakes, forests, hills and the town itself? Or, visit the modern Kalevan Kirrko (Kaleva Church) which ressembles a grain tower from the outside but which needs to be seen to be believed on the inside. If history is more your cup of tea, make sure you stop at the Lenin Museo (Lenin Museum) during your travels. It was in Tampere that Lenin and Stalin first met and the museum commemorates this momentous occasion with photos and mementoes rarely seen elsewhere. Another museum of note, and very different, is Amurin Työläskorttelimuseo (Amuri Museum of Workers' Housing). This museum is sure to interest all the parties in the motorhome consisting as it does of over thirty wooden houses including a sauna, bakery and haberdashers dating from the 1880s to the 1970s. Rarely in the west will travellers find a culture so close to the eastern culture of Russia.

If the children travelling with you are more interested in dolls, make sure your RV stops at Haiharan Nukke-Ja Pukumuseo (Haihara Doll and Costume Museum) situated about 2 miles southwest of the city centre. It houses dolls and costumes from around the world dating from the 12th to the 20th century; a rare treat indeed! For a bit of relaxation after the cultural aspects of the town, RV visitors might like to head to the Särkänniemen Huvikeskus (Särkäniemi Recreation Centre). Here you will find lots to attract both children and adults alike: a planetarium, an aquarium and dolphinarium, an amusement park and a children's zoo. Incredibly, the recreation centre even houses an art museum with works by both Finnish and international artists like Chagall, Klee, Miró and Picasso. Even the architecture of the art museum itself is striking. So, something for every campervan traveller!
